Vinalhaven Island Community

Experience Maine’s largest offshore island, Vinalhaven, a unique rural island community in Penobscot Bay. 

Participants on this trip will explore the island of Vinalhaven, known for its rich history, expansive waterfront, and tight-knit island community. They will engage with local organizations such as the Vinalhaven Land Trust and Vinalhaven Eldercare to learn about the island’s environmental heritage and intergenerational connections, deepening their understanding of Maine’s many island communities. Accommodations will include access to kitchen and shower facilities.

Note: This trip requires travel on the Rockland Ferry out to Vinalhaven. Please contact mckeenOtrips@bowdoin.edu if traveling by boat is a concern.

Sample Itinerary

Wednesday, August 26: Depart Bowdoin, drive up to Rockland, take the ferry out to Vinalhaven, and settle in! Then, volunteer with a local land trust to upkeep the island’s trails!

Thursday, August 27: Volunteer with a local eldercare group to help serve Vinalhaven’s residents, and then explore the island!

Friday, August 28: Help the local school with a project—and then go for a swim!

Saturday, August 29: Move out of your housing, take the ferry back to the mainland, and return to Bowdoin!
