Flagstaff Canoe
This classic trip brings you to one of Maine’s best outdoor locations: Flagstaff Lake! You’ll paddle across the scenic expanse camp on peaceful beaches and islands!
Along the way, you’ll navigate shifting winds, share meals by the fire, and explore the legends of the mysterious alpine apple said to grow only near Avery’s summit (keep your eyes peeled). This trip offers a balanced mix of challenge, relaxation, and shared adventure.
No previous paddling experience required—just comfort in and around water, and a willingness to try new things.
Sample Itinerary
Wednesday, August 26
- Depart Bowdoin and head to Flagstaff Lake!
- Review paddling strokes, safety, and signals, then launch onto Flagstaff Lake.
- Paddle (- 3 miles) to a campsite on the lake shore with an outhouse and camp for the night.
Thursday, August 27
- Break down camp and paddle (- 9 miles) to your next overnight camping spot.
- Enjoy swimming, exploring, and a quiet evening.
Friday, August 28
- Paddle (- 1 miles) to your last campsite.
- In the afternoon, hike the Safford Brook Trail to Avery Peak (- 8 miles round trip).
Saturday, August 29th
- Paddle to Long Falls Dam and pack up your canoes (- 5 miles).
- Load boats and gear, then return to Bowdoin.
