Bigelow Backpack

This classic Maine backpacking adventure takes you along a stretch of the Appalachian Trail through the Bigelow Range. You'll climb through forests, traverse ridgelines with beautiful views, and camp by alpine ponds in tents. Be prepared to use the restroom outside.

Wednesday, August 27

  • Depart Bowdoin. Drive to the trailhead in Stratton(- 2.5 hours).
  • Begin your backpacking journey on the Appalachian Trail toward your campsite (- 3.5 miles total)
  • Set up camp and enjoy your first night.

Thursday, August 28

  • Wake up, eat breakfast, and hit the trail.
  • Climb the Bigelow ridge, summiting West Peak and Avery Peak!
  • Make camp near Safford Notch and refuel with a yummy group dinner (- 4.6 miles total).

Friday, August 29

  • Descend via the Safford Brook Trail to Little Bigelow lean-to (- 6 miles total).

Saturday, August 30

  • Wake up, pack up, and hike out to the van on East Flagstaff road (- 1.3 miles total).
